| Emergency Lighting |
It is of paramount importance for both normal battery as well as self-contained emergency lights that they are properly installed and regulary maintained.
Emergency Lighting is an essential part of Building Services installation. To ensure the system is well designed and as reliable as possible, CLM stresses the importance of planning through all the phases of the project, from legal requirements to final commissioning and maintenance.
Consultation between all interested parties at an early stage of design cannot be overstressed to avoid expensive modifications to a completed system.
Considerable legislation and associated standards exist covering various types of premises which involves the need to incorporate emergency lighting. The statutory documets are: Current Legislation, or the Cinematograph Act 1952, Fire Precaution Act 1971, Designated Order S.I 1972 No.238, The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

| Signs Directive |
The European Signs Directive has been adopted and will be the layout of all Exit signs although at the moment the interim format in BS5499 Pt 1 may still be acceptable. The European sign relies solely on pictograms and is much simpler, only being available showing directions of left, right or straight on.
Exits must be identified by the sign. Other information such as "Fire Exit for Emergency Use Only" is now considered as a building management sign that can be displayed if needed but is not part of the safety system.
